Water Backup Coverage Explained
Water backup coverage is commonly used for sewer backup or sump pump overflow scenarios. It is not the same as flood insurance, and it may have a separate limit, deductible, or exclusion.
Water backup vs flood
Standard homeowners insurance often treats sudden internal water damage differently from outside floodwater. NAIC consumer guidance identifies flood as a major exclusion in typical homeowners policies and notes that flood and earthquake risks usually require separate coverage.
Limits to review
- Water backup limit, such as $5,000, $10,000, or more.
- Whether cleanup, flooring, drywall, and personal property are included.
- Whether a sump pump failure must be sudden and accidental.
- Whether finished basements need higher limits.
